The North Bay Organizing Project seeks a dynamic, experienced, and dedicated Housing and Tenant Organizer for the advancement of the Sonoma County Tenants Union and to provide direction for NBOP’s participation in the development of legislative campaigns related to tenant protections and housing.
The purpose of the North Bay Organizing Project (NBOP) is to build power by uniting institutions, training leaders inside of those institutions, and engaging leaders to change the structures that keep people poor and the planet unhabitable. Our mission is to unite people to build leadership and grassroots power for social, economic, racial and environmental justice.
This position works as a part of a family of NBOP organizers and is accountable to the Lead Organizer. This is an intermediate level position with previous experience required.
Essential Qualifications and Skills:
Demonstrated excellence in communication, both oral and written, for a range of audiences (students, public officials, administrators, press, public, clergy, etc.)
Bilingual preferred
Culturally competent
Demonstrated commitment to non-violent communication and restorative justice practices.
Ability to develop power analysis that results in clear and winnable organizing strategies
Experience working on public policy
Innovative and well-versed in grassroots organizing methodology, including feminist practices.
Demonstrated commitment to tenant rights and, or, housing justice
Proven experience in developing leaders as a mentor, formal trainer, or coach
Ability to grasp and distill complex concepts into clear and morally compelling messages
Ability to inspire and motivate people to act
Coalition builder with ability to work with diverse constituents and allies
Tech savvy and computer proficient, including Word, Excel, Gmail, Google Drive, etc.
Team player who takes initiative; must be able to work independently and collaboratively
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
Areas of Responsibility
Support with the development of a Sonoma County Tenants’ Union through membership recruitment and leadership development
Identify and train member leaders to develop other leaders
Organize and support the engagement of NBOP and the Tenants’ Union in political activities relating to tenants and housing, including ballot initiatives and local demonstrations.
Conduct substantial 1 on 1s with grassroots leaders, public officials, and within NBOP member institutions
Participate as an active member of the organizing staff of NBOP including “all hands on deck” activities that may include annual fundraisers, actions, or other events and trainings
Engage in fundraising activities not to exceed 20% of working hours
Represent NBOP and SCTU in various regional and statewide coalitions
Location: Sonoma County, CA with some regional travel, flexible in office scheduleCompensation: $70,000 annual salary with Kaiser medical benefits after 1 month of employment, three weeks accrued vacation, two weeks holiday office closure, one week accrued sick time, 13 paid holidays, workers compensation, retirement savings, wellness benefits, professional development and more.
Must own a car and be able to drive, show proof of insurance, lift boxes of over 30 pounds and move over various types of terrain.
