“We practice the world we want in the space between us” – Valerie Kaur
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We are in a moment of profound choice- the choice of what we are called to do and how we go about doing it. At NBOP, we know what it means to feel and transform panic into power. In Sonoma County, we are no strangers to struggle and emergency— masked men kidnap and tear families apart, evictions push people from their homes, and catastrophic wildfires and floods are single weather events away.
In these times of multiple crises, it can feel overwhelming. We can’t rely on old institutions or the government to guarantee basic human rights to healthcare, food, and shelter. We’ll be honest: we've felt grief and that desperate question—"How are we building power?"
But here's what these crises have also shown us: people care. People want to take action for themselves, their families, and their neighbors. Powerful compassion and righteous anger live here in Sonoma County and that compassion in action is rising in response to growing need. Over the last ten months we’ve seen ordinary folks doing extraordinary things, staying rooted in the faith of our collective power and the right of all of us to live free from fear.
This year alone, we trained over 1,200 legal observers and 48 bilingual dispatchers across Sonoma, Napa, and Solano counties as part of our North Bay Rapid Response Network. We organized five multi-day training sessions for our community leaders—including a two-week summer youth program—and quarterly training on base-building, media literacy, nonviolent direct action, fundraising, and power mapping. We are fortifying existing infrastructure, expanding base-building, and moving resources to the intersections of our work in immigrant defense, housing, climate change, and civil liberties.
By training leaders, exercising self-governance, and centering healing justice, we choose the dignity of our neighbors and the sacredness of the next seven generations.
This is the world we want to live in.
Right now, you have a choice. This is our invitation for you to practice NOW the
world you want to live in.
Come join us. Sign up for a training or invest in our work. We can choose to build an ecosystem of care and dignity.
