VICTORY! Historic Win for Tenants as Just Cause Eviction Protections Pass in Petaluma

We did it!

After a more than 2 year fight to protect Petaluma tenants, we landed a major victory. On September 12, the Petaluma City Council PASSED a local Just Cause ordinance.

That means Petaluma tenants will now be protected against unfair evictions and will receive a greater safety net to prevent being displaced. This local ordinance helps close loopholes left by the statewide Tenant Protection Act that leaves too many tenants vulnerable to mistreatment.

This moment underscores the power of our collective organizing. We may not have the capital to buy our way like landlords or wealthy investors, but we DO have the people power that will reshape our future in Sonoma County.

“When tenants work together as a united front, we can force the powers that be to prioritize our needs. With the patchwork of short-term protections, loopholes, and final hour changes, tenants have been pushed to the brink of trying to make ends meet through this ongoing pandemic. But we reminded Petaluma City Council that tenants are making history right here, right now, by passing the first Just Cause ordinance in a Sonoma County City. And this decision is not an end, it’s a catalyst.” – Noa Hughes, Board Member of the Sonoma County Tenants Union

This moment underscores the power of our collective organizing. We may not have the capital to buy our way like landlords or wealthy investors, but we DO have the people power that we can use to shape our future in Sonoma County.
